Results are posted. Congratulations to all who finished the Fourth Annual Lewis & Clark Ultra.
Thank you to all volunteers. There would not be a race without you.
Thank you to sponsors. It would not be as pleasant or rewarding without you.
And most of all, thank you to the riders who competed. Without you, it would just be me driving around out in the woods and sitting in the dark and the cold alone.

The second day of spring. Aaah, isn't it great. Bike rides in the sun. Flowers and trees thick with leaves. Riding all day and into the night. Let's keep this thing going. I'm planning a new type of race for the end of the season. It is called a Ride-N-Tie and it will be fun, challenging and involve - stratagy. Something endurance cycling doesn't usually find necessary. Keep checking back for more details.

We have a fantastic collection of sponsors this year: Hammer, again, plus VelEau, Leatherman, Fax Barrel and Crispin Cider, Starbucks and HotFootPhoto. Tell all your friends. I am also looking into putting on an awesome Ride-N-Tie in August. More details to come.
We also have two hotels giving special discounts to participants of the Lewis & Clark Ultra. Please see the "Information" page for more details.

This year, the Lewis & Clark Ultra will include a six hour loop - IF there is enough participation. In order to make this make this new edition feasible, there needs to be at least six riders.
Tell your friends. If you know somebody who can, or wants to, ride a century they are fit for this route. The 50 - 60 mile loop will follow the long loop for the first 15 - 20 miles, then loop back to the start line. The racers will then follow the short loop until their six hours have expired.
This six hour loop will be hilly, but beautiful. Crew support is allowed.
January 11, 2011 (or 1/11/11)
Welcome to 2011. I am beginning my work on the 4th annual Lewis & Clark Ultra. It will still be held on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday. The route will be the same, however the start time will be a little later, 7 AM. I would like to start earlier, but I have to consider the finish time for those 12 hour people. I am also playing with the idea of opening up a 6 hour option.
Sign up early to be sure and have your name listed on the roster. This will act to seed the bowl and more great riders will join. Also, there will be a fee increase beginning May 1, so please don't wait too long. However, to sooner you register, the easier the event is for me to plan. Just a thought.
Thank you.

What a great race. We had some good competition and the afternoon brought us great weather. Thank you all who raced and volunteered, and especially to those unofficial volunteers like the Walshes. I would also like to thank Hammer Nutrition for the generous supply of nutrition products such as Perpetuem, gel, bars and goodie bags. Camas Bike Shop also donated a water bottle and free maintenance, or bike rental which went to Hugh Gapay for making his win this year a hat trick. Go Hugh.
The race started off with soft sprinkles, which turned to a hard rain by the time I started the last rider. The top of the Mount Livingston climb was fogged in and wet, but the temp was not too cold and it was really quite pleasant. The Old Man Pass climb gave the racers sprinkles on and off, but they were met with pretty, smiley faces at the top and goodies to eat and drink.
The rain tapered off by the time the first riders were hitting the north county and sunny at the start/finish line.
I look forward to next year.

Ten days to go until the L&C Ultra.
I have just added a new challenge to the race, a King of the Mountains competition. We will be racing up Mount Livingston and Old Man Pass. The person with the shortest time up those two climbs will be the King of the Mountains.

A penniless, suffering, pirate ride. De Ronde van oeste Portlandia (Tour of West Portland) is just one month from today. I'm going to be there trying to beat my time and my cramps. Who else is in? The ride is not for sissies, so if you have the legs, go for it. It is a great tour. I have loved the last two I rode and felt very accomplished afterward also. Here are some links to more info. However, keep in mind this is an underground ride, there is no registration and no governing body. It is just a group of hard core bikers out for a painful, yet rewarding ride.

We have a new sponsor. I am very pleased to announce that Hammer Nutrition will be sponsoring the Lewis & Clark Ultra. They will have fuel available at all four aid stations and donate goodie bags to all participants.
Thank you Hammer.

Hot Foot Photo, our staff photographer last year, was at the Jack Frost Time Trial at Vancouver Lake taking lots of pictures of the racers. See their website at http://hotfootphoto.com/ for race photos.

Fall is upon us and with the colors and the colder temps and the wind, I start thinking about next year's Lewis & Clark Ultra. I was so pleased with this year's turn out and results. Powerbar supplied prizes for the top three finishers and nutrition during the race. I intend to do everything I can to make this race better each year. I have received feedback from many of the racers, crew and volunteers and will do what I can to accommodate.
I look forward to seeing most of you back again next year and hopefully a few more will join in to up the competition level even more. Have a good winter, train hard and I'll see you in the spring.

We have a great line up for this year's race. It is going to be a tough one,
especially for the 24 hour group.
Below is a letter I received from on of the participants, Mike Maughan. Please help Mike in his fight against Lupus.
Hi All,
As many of you know, I have a passion for cycling. A few months ago, I decided
to pair this passion with a worthy cause.
In July I will be attempting the Race Across
Oregon, a 539-mile
bicycle race. The race starts on
Saturday morning and
continues until you finish, or the 49-hour time limit is reached. Last year's
winner finished in 35 hours. You might be asking yourself, "why would anybody do
this?" That's a good question.
With this race, I'm raising money to give to the
Lupus Foundation of America
(LFA). Lupus is a
potentially fatal
autoimmune disease where the body's own defenses attack the organs, such
as the skin, heart, lungs, kidneys, or brain. I have seen first-hand that it is
a horrible disease, and it affects more than 1.5 million Americans and 5 million
people worldwide.
Unfortunately, 2009 marks the 50th anniversary since there has been any new
approved treatment for Lupus. That's right there is no known cure, and there has
been nothing new since 1959. Money donated to the LFA goes toward research,
public education and information, patient education, professional education, and
advocacy.
My goal is to raise $5000 to give to the LFA - Northwest Chapter and to raise
awareness. I ask for your help in reaching this goal. Every bit donated goes a
long way and makes a positive impact for many people. You can make a
tax-deductible donation
online or contact me if
you wish to donate in other ways. For those of you that have donated, thank you
so much, but remember, the fight is not over. Please also check out the fund
raising progress, or get my training updates and
blog online. If you
cannot donate, please help out by passing along this email or a few of my links.
Sincerest thanks,
Mike
